About Mary

The Heart Behind Carter’s Crowns & Gems

My name is Mary. I’m 62 years old, a nurse, and the proud mother of two sons. This December, I’ll step into an exciting new role when I become a grandmother for the very first time.

My journey into wigs began during what should have been one of the proudest moments of my nursing career.

A few years ago, I received a prestigious award from our State Nurses’ Association. My employer reserved tables for coworkers who wanted to attend, supervisors from our corporate office flew in, and my family joined me to celebrate. I stood before a large audience while the nomination submitted on my behalf was read aloud.

It was an incredible honor. Yet instead of being fully present and enjoying the moment, I remember feeling terribly self-conscious about my appearance. The humidity had gotten the best of my very fine hair, and I simply didn’t feel like myself.

I knew a couple of women who wore wigs and always looked beautiful in them, so I thought, “I’m going to find a wig that I can wear for special occasions.”

And just like that, the search was on.

My first wig was Ignite by Jon Renau, and I loved it. Before long, I started wearing it to work. Coworkers would stop by my office to compliment my “new hairstyle,” and some even told me, “Your hairdresser did a great job!”

Eventually, I would smile and let them in on my little secret: it was a wig.

It didn’t take long for that first wig to become a few. Then one day, my sister asked me a simple question:

“Why aren’t you selling them?”

The funny thing was, I already had a retail license. So once again, the search was on—this time to learn how I could turn my newfound love of wigs into a business.

Carter’s Crowns & Gems began as an idea for creating additional income as I prepared for retirement. What it became was something I never could have expected.

Yes, I fell in love with wigs—but even more importantly, I found a community.

This journey has introduced me to some of the most wonderful women. I’ve formed genuine friendships, shared laughter and stories, and had the privilege of helping women find hair that makes them feel beautiful, comfortable, and confident.

What began with one humid day, very fine hair, and a moment when I didn’t feel my best has grown into something incredibly special.

I may have started this journey looking for a wig, but I found so much more: meaningful friendships, a wonderful community, and the opportunity to help other women feel like themselves again.

I’m truly grateful you’re here, and I would be honored to help you find a crown that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
